The Otsego High School girls soccer team is celebrating another win after securing its second consecutive Wolverine Conference Championship with a  9-1 victory over Three Rivers on Tuesday night.

For Head Coach Levi Butcher, the accomplishment is a reflection of the high level of work ethic and integrity that the girls have shown this season.  

“This is one of the toughest Division 2 districts in the state, and our girls have worked incredibly hard to put themselves in position to compete at a high level again this year,” said Coach Butcher. “Winning the Wolverine Conference in back-to-back seasons is something special, and this team has really embraced what it means to leave a legacy.”

The last time that the Bulldogs claimed back to back conference championships was 2018 and 2019. 

Otsego had hoped to secure the championship at home against rival Plainwell in what was expected to be the deciding conference matchup. After their Three Rivers matchup was delayed by the early spring storms as well as defeating Plainwell last week, Coach Butcher shared that the Bulldogs knew they were in position to claim the title, but had to wait for last night’s postponed matchup against Three Rivers to officially seal it. 

“Seeing our seniors light up at the final whistle was really special,” Coach Butcher shared. “I’m not sure it has fully sunk in for the players yet, but winning two conference championships in a row is such a cool accomplishment.”

The Bulldogs dominated play from start to finish against Three Rivers, showcasing their teamwork and good decision making with the ball. 

Junior standout Olivia Witteveen continued her remarkable year by scoring four goals, including a hat trick within the first 23 minutes of play.

Senior captain Kara Moore added two goals and one assist while delivering one of her strongest performances of the season. Fellow senior captain Constantine Taylor contributed two assists and anchored the defense with tough, physical play throughout the match.

In the midfield, Ruby Gerst helped control the pace of the game, distributing the ball and keeping the Bulldogs organized offensively and defensively.

“Honestly, all of our girls played dominant soccer,” said Coach Butcher. “We possess the ball so well that it doesn’t leave many opportunities for opponents to find a rhythm. That starts in the midfield, and Ruby did a great job getting everyone involved and making smart decisions all night.”

With another conference championship secured, the Bulldogs now turn their focus to the postseason. They’ll face Wayland at home on May 22 at 6 p.m. as they look to defend their district title, with hopes of making a run toward the state championships.
