Zachary Knapp with picnic tables

Junior Zachary Knapp saw a need in the community and made it his goal to fill it with his Eagle Scout project.

Seeing a need for more tables and places to sit, junior Zachary Knapp decided to build his Eagle Scout project around that gap at Otsego’s Riverfront TOP Pavilion. But he took it a step further, making sure it was accessible for all. “I personally believe everyone should be able to access public resources without any barriers,” Zachary says. “I also believe it creates a more welcoming environment for everyone in the community.”

After a conversation with Otsego City Manager Aaron Mitchell, and approval from the Scouts, he got started with planning, paperwork and gathering funding for the project. This summer, his plan came to fruition. Enlisting several friends, including fellow future Eagle Scout Simon Pobocik, the picnic tables were assembled and are now available at the pavilion. “It took me and six other people 5 hours to build all 3 picnic tables,” he explains. He estimates that he put in about 85 hours over the last year for it all to come together.

Now, he’s one step closer to achieving his Eagle Scout status. “It feels amazing to be this close to achieving my Eagle Scout. It's been something I've been working towards since 1st grade, and to be this close to it is a great feeling.” He’s also glad to have been given the opportunity to do this and benefit the city. “And I hope other young kids begin to become interested in Boy Scouts and start contributing to the community in a positive way.”

He would like to thank all of his sponsors and those who helped him finish his project.
