From the November 2018 OPS Connection column from Supt. Jeff Haase:
I hope you all were able to enjoy time with friends and/or family over the Thanksgiving weekend. It is hard to believe winter is right around the corner! The seasonal changes are one of the things I appreciate most about living in Michigan. Otsego Public Schools is also preparing for a change, as we will start prior to Labor Day for the 2019-2020 school year.
The Allegan Area Educational Service Agency (AAESA) received a three-year waiver that allows local school districts to start prior to Labor Day. The OPS calendar for next year is complete, with school starting on August 19, 2019. The first three weeks of school will only be four days and all buildings will be closed on the first two Fridays. Additionally, the calendar includes two breaks, from October 21-25 and February 17-21, called Intercessions. During this time:
- Additional academic support will be available to students who need it, with participation being highly recommended and possibly required. There will be no cost; transportation, breakfast and lunch will be provided.
- Academic enrichment opportunities will be offered for interested students with the cost being similar to our summer programs.
- The academic support and enrichment will be provided by teachers, support staff, administrators and/or professionals from the community.
I will hold parent forums regarding the calendar and intercessions in February and March. The Intercessions Committee will begin meeting in January to develop programming for the 2019-2020 school year and we plan to release detailed information in the June OPS Connection newsletter.
I hope you have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. There are great things happening at Otsego Public Schools and we appreciate your continued support!
