Mackenzie Phillips, and OHS sophomore, is an assistant coach for the Grand Rapids Tidal Waves women's football team. Last year, she organized a toy drive for the team where new toys would go to kids in the hospital at Christmas. “Not every child gets to run downstairs on Christmas morning, and it fills my heart knowing that we can make kids smile, and that they know how much others care for them,” Mackenzie says.
Knowing several kids at Dix Street, the two 5th grade classes joined in the effort this year and made it a competition. Over the last month, the two classes collected 435 toys, books, and other items that will go to children at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. The students really got into this giving project and wanted to help others. One student wrote notes on the gifts, another student used all of her charity money toward the drive and yet another student donated some XBOX gift cards!
“I’m blown away by the generosity of the students from Mrs. Evan’s and Mrs. Senn’s classes! They have shown that giving is more important than receiving. I am so proud of each and every one of them!”
The winning class gets a pizza party and a visit from the team's quarterback.
