Based on Kid President’s idea for "Medals of Awesome" in his book, Dix Street 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Senn, chose this year’s gift exchange to come from the heart. Her class had already donated hundreds of toys for a toy drive for Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital so she was looking for something that would cost any more money. What she found was a heart-warming way to send the kids off for Christmas break.
Each child drew a name and kept it secret. They had time during the day to create a handmade medal or award using materials at school or anything they wanted to bring from home. They first had to design it and decide what they were going to tell each other when they presented. “I told them to think of how their person makes the world a better place. How do they make the world more awesome?” says Mrs. Senn. On Thursday before break, students presented their awards to each other. They went to the front of the room to present their award, say their thoughts and then they delivered it to their person. “It was truly heartwarming to see and hear,” Senn says, “Some kids wrote letters to each other with the award, one made up a poem, and everyone was feeling pretty awesome by the end of the fun. I am going to do it every year.”
