Band Hits High Note in Marching Season

There isn’t any more room on the makeshift trophy shelf in the high school band room. It is filled with signs of success from the 2018 Marching Band season. The band, comprised of more than 100 students, took home 18 trophies this year, the most in quite a while, according to band director Mitch Piersma.

The band put on an energetic show this year themed “Go!” featuring the music of the band OK Go and used the music to create a traffic themed performance complete with dancing and singing. They earned two 1st place finishes, one tie for 1st place with a school that typically goes undefeated during marching season (Otsego received a 2nd place trophy due to a tie-breaker),  they placed 2nd twice missing 1st place by 0.1 point in Hastings and 0.7 in Jenison. Otsego marked the 2nd highest final score in OHS history by earning 93.1 at Grandville.

There are also caption awards during each competition. Otsego percussion brought home the award for Best Percussion at all five shows this season!

Other caption awards were:

  • Best Music at 2 shows
  • Best Marching at 4 shows
  • Best Color Guard at 2 shows
