In honor of two retirees, the Dix Street Elementary staff dedicated a Little Library complete with new books. It was a rainy day, so the dedication happened inside the school library, but it was an exciting moment still. “This is a wonderful way for people to share their favorite books with others and also a way to discover new books,” says Kristin VanWyk, Kindergarten teacher at DSE.
Community members can come to the Little Library with a book from their home or no book at all; they can either trade or take a new book to read. Books can be exchanged and returned or taken and shared elsewhere, “Our hope is to encourage reading outside of the school day and at home,” VanWyk says. When Sally LaRoy and Sue Rickli retired last year, the staff thought it was a great time to launch this effort as a way to thank them for their years of dedication to the school and continue to spread their love of reading and learning with others as they begin a new chapter in their lives.
Dix Street teachers all brought a book to donate to the little library to get it started. The Little Library sits near the circle drive in front of Dix Street Elementary.
