Lemonade Stand Sweetens Purple Fundraiser

Otsego 4th grader, Navene Town, wanted to help out Otsego’s Purple Community Fundraiser and he knew just how to do it. He held a lemonade stand during his elementary school’s orientation night. Set up right near Washington Street Elementary (and the middle school) he got a lot of customers on the busy night. Family and friends stopped by to donate and also donated online. In total, he raised $488.80. All of the money raised through the Purple Community fundraiser goes to Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids; 100% goes directly into the research lab.

On Friday, September 7th, he presented the donation to OHS Purple Committee members with a giant check. The students’ goal for this year’s event is $28,500 and this offers a great boost toward that goal. If you would like to donate, or purchase an event t-shirt, you can find those links at www.otsegops.org/purplecommunity/

In addition to t-shirts and accessories, several businesses have sponsored the event and will join the Community Night Kids Carnival on September 28th. It is a $100 donation to set up a booth; the deadline to sign up is September 21st. There will also be purple banners on downtown Otsego light posts honoring loved ones who have fought cancer; and the Community Shoppers Guide is sharing journey stories of those who have been impacted by cancer.

For the third time, Otsego Purple Community Event will consist of an entire week of athletic contests where we’ll trade in the blue and gold and go purple! The Community Night / Kids Carnival is also back for the Purple Game Night on the lawn near the press box. During the athletic events, our student-athletes will wear special purple jerseys with the name of a loved one impacted by cancer on the back. Some of these loved ones are connected with the athlete and some are community members who have sponsored those jerseys and will get them after the contest. There are a few jerseys available to sponsor. If you are interested, contact Holly McCaw, Otsego Public Schools Director of Communications at hmccaw@otsegops.org or 692-6073.
