Purple Game Returns for 5th event

Purple Community Week to support Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids. It’s a week-long event that culminates more than a month of fundraising activities to support cancer research at VAI. With Purple Community, 100% of proceeds go directly to research.

Over the last four events at Otsego, our community has raised almost $72,000. The goal this year is to reach $100,000 in total giving. That amount will put Otsego Public Schools on the Collaboration of Hope Wall in the main lobby area at Van Andel Institute, marking a major milestone in our efforts to help fund cancer research in our community. This year, “We Are Purple” is the theme and we want to turn the town purple! Purple is the color VAI connects with survival and this is a cause that can connect us all.

The 2018 Purple Event Committee has developed a number of ways for the entire community, and our families, to get involved in this cause; nearly every life has been touched in some way by the devastating effects of cancer and this a great way to come together for a common goal.

Business / Organization Sponsorships

From now until July 20th, OPS is accepting business or organization sponsorships for the event. Your company/organization logo will go on the back of the event t-shirt. Sponsorship information must be received by Thursday, July 19th. Sponsorships levels run from $100 - $1000. See sponsorship details here and below. You can also pay online here. (Email Holly McCaw at hmccaw@otsegops.org or call 269-692-6073 to commit by the deadline.)

Be a part of the Community Night Kids’ Carnival

For a $100 donation, any business or organization is invited to set up a booth at our kids’ carnival. This drew hundreds of kids in 2016 and we’re hoping to match the participation this year! While kids play carnival games or have fun in bounce houses, parents and families can learn more about our community partners at the booths. Booth details are in the above sponsorship link.

Let’s Turn Otsego Purple

New this year are street sign banners that honor a loved one who has battled cancer. For $150, you can purchase a banner that will go on one of the lamp posts in downtown Otsego. These are in limited quantities. After the first donation, you’ll have the first opportunity to sponsor the banner again in future years for $100. The banners are purple and include a picture and name of the loved one honored.

Share Your Journey

Sometimes, the greatest contribution is one to share your experience. The Community Shoppers Guide is sponsoring special articles for the event that help to share the true meaning of Purple Community. At the core, this fundraiser is about fighting cancer. Part of the fight is having others’ support. This feature asks people to donate by sharing their journey. Your story of how cancer impacted you, a spouse, a child, a friend or loved one could help someone else in the battle. This is special way to donate. The journey stories are published at no cost this year. Stories will shared throughout the month of September. Stories can be submitted from now until September 14th. See details on sharing your journey here and below.

Donate!

You don’t have to purchase anything to be a part of this effort. Also new this year is a way to make a straight donation to Otsego’s Purple Community Event. You can find the link at our Purple Community Event Webpage.

T-Shirt / Accessories

A purple event comes with a purple t-shirt! This year, it’s a baseball style t-shirt with a new logo for this year’s event. T-shirts are just $10. Sunglasses, necklaces, bracelets, fandanas and more are also on sale for $1 - $5. You can order those online or any booth at home football games, at the Gus Macker Tournament, Creative Arts Festival and school orientation nights. Sales will begin in mid-August.

Jersey Sponsorships

During Purple Community Week, the Otsego Varsity soccer, volleyball, football and cheer teams will wear special purple jerseys and shirts that can be sponsored for a loved one impacted by cancer. If you sponsor the shirt, you choose the name that goes on the back of the jersey. The athlete will proudly wear that jersey during their game, then it’s yours to keep. Sponsorships range in price depending the sport. All jersey sponsorships are on a first come first served basis. Players get the first opportunity to sponsor their own jersey. Jersey sponsorships will be available beginning in mid-August. Football jerseys will be $100, Volleyball and Soccer jerseys will be $75. Cheer shirts are not yet priced.
