Recently, students in the Reader/Writer Workshop class read an article in their Scholastic magazine about a young girl whose life changed in drastic ways when her village received a fresh water well. The impact was so great on that one girl that the students wanted to do more. “When we finished reading, the kids asked, ‘couldn’t we do something to help, too?’”, says Mrs. Layton.
The students partnered with World Vision to raise awareness and money for millions around the world in need of access to clean drinking water. “This is our heart in sponsoring this event.” Students collected donations and got sponsors; they also invited other students to join them. On Friday, May 17, about 30 students joined in the event and walked or ran 4 miles. That’s the average distance that millions in developing countries walk daily to access water.
The students raised between $300-$400.
