Otsego Honors 24 Graduating with Distinction

Valedictorian

Nathan Piersma is the son of Mitch and Pamela Piersma, of Otsego. Nate plans to attend the University of Michigan this fall to major in biochemistry and pursue a career in medical research; he received the University of Michigan Regents Merit Scholarship. During high school, he was involved in the Northbridge Church music team (drummer), Pierce Cedar Creek Institute (Land Stewardship Volunteer), Western Michigan University Heart Disease Research, JV Basketball and the National Honor Society. He also worked for the Community Shoppers Guide and Lynx Golf Course. Nate was a scholar athlete (9th & 10th grade), a recipient of the United Way 2018 If You Can Dream It award and was invited to join the University of Michigan Honors Program.

Joshua David is the son of Paul and Amy David, of Rockford. Josh plans to attend Grand Valley State University to study corporate finance. He received the Grand Valley Award for Excellence and Grand Valley Faculty Scholarship. During high school, he was a part of Student Council, National Honor Society and the swim team serving as a captain. For swim, he has been recognized as All-Conference, All-County, All-State and Academic All-American.


Brenna Larkey is the daughter of Susan and Svend Kloster-Larkey, of Otsego. Brenna plans to attend the University of Michigan School of Nursing this fall. Brenna was involved in Yearbook and National Honor Society.


Graduating with Distinction:

Ellie Bronkema is the daughter of Roxanne and Owen Bronkema, of Otsego. Ellie plans to attend Eastern Michigan University this fall as a Pre-Medicine major. She has received the EMU Emerald Scholarship, Charles and Emma Clapp and Advia Foundation scholarships. She was involved in National Honor Society, O-Club (vice president), Volleyball (captain), Tennis (captain), and with her youth group at Otsego United Methodist Church. She was awarded Most Improved Player and All-Conference Honorable Mention her sophomore year in tennis and Most Improved Player junior year in volleyball.


Isaac Clemens is the son of Lori Clemens, of Kalamazoo. Isaac received the Centralis Gold Scholarship to attend Central Michigan University in the fall. He plans to study Music Composition/Vocal Performance with a minor in Leadership. He is pursuing a career in musical theater composition. He also received the MEA MVS State Scholarship. Isaac was involved in Student Council (president), National Honor Society (treasurer), Class office (treaturer), tennis (captain), choir (section leader) and participated in the musical all four years, playing the lead male role his last two years. He was a four-year state vocal solo and ensemble qualifier, and received the scholar-athlete award.


Jadon Clugston is the son of Amy and John Clugston, of Otsego. He received the Bronco Merit Scholarship and will attend Western Michigan University this fall to study Computer Engineering and Research. He was involved in marching band (section leader), National Honor Society and swim team. He was All-Conference and Academic All-American for swimming.


Alexandra (Ally) Cole is the daughter of Clayton and Marion Cole, of Kalamazoo. Ally will attend Central Michigan University on the Centralis Gold scholarship this fall to major in business. She was involved in yearbook, tennis, track, National Honor Society (secretary) and Swim (captain two years.) She has been an OHS scholar athlete and state qualifier in swim all four years.


Carlie Doubblestien is the daughter of Dan Doubblestien and Jessica Summers, of Otsego. Carlie plans to attend Kalamazoo Valley Community College in the fall to study finance; she received the KVCC Merit Scholarship. She was involved in National Honor Society, band, musical and Tae Kwon Do.


Gina Farrell is the daughter of Linda and Thomas Farrell, of Kalamazoo. Gina received the HAIL Scholarship and plans to attend the University of Michigan this fall to study Public Health and Environment. She would like to be either an environmental specialist or a healthcare administrator. Gina was involved in National Honor Society, Cross Country (co-captain), Tennis (captain), the O Club, Musical and choir (section leader.) She was a four-year scholar athlete.


Molly Farrell is the daughter of Linda and Thomas Farrell, of Kalamazoo. Molly received the Bronco Merit Scholarship and Legacy Scholarship and will attend Western Michigan University in the fall to study advertising and promotion. She hopes to have a career in the business world that will tie into her passion for art. Molly participated in cross country (captain), tennis (captain), O Club, National Honor Society, choir (section leader) and musical. She was All-Conference two years, All-Region one year for cross country. . She was also a captain of the tennis team, a section leader in choir and participated in musical, O Club and National Honor Society. She was a four-year scholar athlete and 2-year state qualifier for vocal solo and ensemble.


Yusif Gurbani is an exchange student from Azerbaijan. He lived in Otsego with Angeles and Michael Plum. Yusif will attend the University of Miami this fall, with plans to transfer to Stanford University to major in Computer Engineering and Business. He has received the Presidential Scholarship and Foreigner Excellence Scholarship. During high school, both in Azerbaijan and Otsego, he was involved with the Intellectual Games Club (president), UN and UNICEF projects as a chief volunteer, robotics, School Parliament (president), soccer, basketball, physics club (president), math club (president) and was a county youth ambassador in the USA (northern states.) He was ranked #1 of the graduates in his Azerbaijan high school, named student of the year, national Intellectual Games absolute champion, Top 4 in National Physics Olympiad, Math Olympiad winner and received the European Distinct Graduation diploma. Of his year in Otsego, he says it was a “unique and unforgettable experience to be a bulldog.”


Ashtyn Harmon is the daughter of Heather Lee, of Otsego. Ashtyn will attend Western Michigan University in the fall to study business and marketing to pursue a career in medical marketing. She played volleyball, golf, basketball, track, softball, tennis and was involved in National Honor Society.


Elisabeth Hoffman is the daughter of David and Laura Hoffman, of Kalamazoo. Elisabeth received the Bronco Merit Scholarship and plans to attend Western Michigan University in the fall to study biomedical sciences to become a physician. She also received the Consumers Credit Union Scholarship. In high school, she was in Marching Band (section leader), Concert band, Symphonic band, Kalamazoo County 4-H (township club president), National Honor Society and was a Freshman mentor. She was honorable mention for the VFW Voice of Democracy Essay Scholarship contest in 2017, and received the Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence from the US Marine Corps.


Collin Hunt is the son of Nathan and Jennifer Hunt, of Martin.  Collin plans to attend Central Michigan University in the fall to study Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering. He received the CMU Academic Scholarship. In high school he participated in Football (captain), track and National Honor Society. He was All-State Academic First Team for football.


Anna Janke is the daughter of Steve and Mel Janke, of Kalamazoo. Anna plans to attend the University of Oregon in the fall to double major in Marine Biology and Environmental Studies. She plans to pursue a career in either Environmental Policy or Sustainability Consulting. She received the Summit Merit Scholarship from the U of O. In high school, she was involved with  Student Council, Yearbook, Basketball, Softball, a class officer and National Honor Society.


Noah Khanfar is the son of Amjad and Cheryl Khanfar, of Otsego. Noah received the Bronco Merit Scholarship and will attend Western Michigan University in the fall to major in Electrical Engineering to pursue a career in research. He was an AP scholar and spent his senior year as a research assistant at WMU. Noah also received an internship with FEMA for engineering.


Madison Kinnane is the daughter of Chuck and Tera Kinnane, of Plainwell. Madison plans to attend Grand Valley State University in the fall to major in early childhood education and minor in child psychology. She received the GVSU Merit Award for Excellence. She is a 4-year scholar athlete and participated in basketball for 2 years, softball all 4 years and National Honor Society.


Emerald Mehler is the daughter of Kelley and Michael Mehler, of Otsego. She received the Presidential Scholarship of Excellence from Michigan Technological University where she will attend this fall to study chemical engineering. Emerald was involved in art club, band and National Honor Society. She was also a member of the Society of Women Engineers.


Mikayla Morey is the daughter of Amy and Mark Morey, of Portage. Mikayla plans to attend Western Michigan University this fall to major in social work. She plans to get her master’s degree and become a clinical social worker. She has been involved in Marching, Concert and Symphonic bands as well as the pep band and jazz band. She was in the Pit orchestra for musical, a member of the National Honor Society and a freshman mentor. She received Division 1 and 2 ratings at MSBOA district and state festivals for trumpet solos and ensembles.


David Rininger is the son of David Rininger and Janelle Quigley of Otsego. David plans to attend Central Michigan University this fall; he received the CMU Academic Excellence Scholarship. He participated in football and served as captain.


Brenna Stratton is the daughter of Todd and Carla Stratton, of Kalamazoo. Brenna plans to attend Cornerstone University this fall to major in Biology and minor in Biblical Studies. She received the Cornerstone Pastors Scholarship, Cornerstone Presidential Scholarship. Cornerstone Women’s Track Scholarship, Clapp Family Scholarship and Otsego Run Club Scholarship. She participated in cross country, track & field, Otsego Run Club, Yearbook, Chamber choir, Musical, National Honor Society and Allegan’s Pro-Youth Team; she was also a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Devotional Leader and Freshman mentor. In cross country, she was Academic All-State, All-conference (2x), All-region (2x) and received the Bush Award for Most Spirit and Wendy’s Heisman School Award.


Grace Verhage is the daughter of DJ and Rita Verhage and Ginger and Cody Titus, both of Otsego. Grace plans to attend Ferris State University this fall to major Business with advanced studies in Innovation and Design Management; she will also play soccer. She received the Otsego Public Schools Foundation Alumni Scholarship, Winkel Family Character Scholarship, Otsego Run Club Scholarship and Woodbridge North Ferris (WNF) Provost’s Scholarship. She was involved with student council (treasurer), a class officer all four years (secretary), Pro Youth Team, National Honor Society, O Club, Church youth group, French and Spanish club, cross country (captain), basketball (captain) and soccer (captain 2 years.) In cross country, she was named Most Improved Player, All-Conference (4x), All-County (4x), All-Region (4x) and All-State. She was a member of the State Runner-up team and both State Championship cross country teams. In basketball, she was All-Conference and part of the Conference Championship team and two District Championships teams. In soccer she was All-Conference (3x), All-County (2x), All-District (3x), All-Region, All-State, Rookie of the Year and named Best Offensive Player (3x).


Anna Watson is the daughter of Jason and Gina Watson, of Plainwell. Anna plans to attend Grand Valley State University in the fall to major in Nursing. She received the GVSU Merit Scholarship. Anna was involved in student council (secretary), National Honor Society (vice president), tennis (captain), volleyball, Musical and the O Club (secretary.) She was the MVP for tennis and is a four-year scholar-athlete.


Kassidy Wesaw is the daughter of Necole and Jason Wesaw, of Kalamazoo. Kassidy plans to attend Kalamazoo College in the fall to study Biology. She received the Lux Esto and Mandell scholarships. She participated in softball, National Honor Society and chamber singers (president) in high school and was All-Conference in softball as well as the team defensive MVP. She is a 4-year scholar-athlete.
