Dix Street Elementary Media Center Aide, Barb Davis, boosted reading last month by celebrating National Picture Book month. She got some ideas from a recent conference and this was one way to get kids excited about reading. “It’s fun, this is how we start reading,” Davis says. Children are introduced to reading with picture books; the kids look at the pictures to help them tell the story; those pictures match up with words that they soon learn to master. Each week, she did something different with the kids including the 3rd book challenge, where the 3rd book students checked out of the library had to be a picture book, even for the upper elementary students. She had kindergarten and 1st grade students vote on their favorite author to see which book which gets circulated the most. Picture books were also used for reading buddies, that’s when older student have a partner in the lower elementary and read to, or with, them. It was a lot of fun for the younger kids to do more reading and for the older kids to go back to their roots of how they learned to read. Davis also gave a picture book to each teacher for their classroom.
