'Tis the Season to Help Others

Adopting families, food drives, toy drives and more! In the weeks leading up to the holiday break, our students and staff take on a number of community service efforts to help those less fortunate have a very merry Christmas.
Here are a few of the projects:
  • Alamo students bought gifts for local families
  • Dix Street students bought gifts for families and collected toys for Toys for Tots and for the Grand Rapids Tidal Waves annual toy drive for Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.
  • Washington Street students collected hygiene products to help stock the shelves at Christian Neighbors.
  • All three elementary schools created holiday cards with special greetings for Wings of Hope Hospice that are delivered to the families they serve. There more than 500 cards created and donated.
  • The middle school held its annual food drive and collected more than 8,500 items (a combination of monetary donations and food.) That surpassed their 8,000 goal. The food drive benefits Christian Neighbors.
  • OMS staff adopt several families to provide kids with gifts at the holidays.
  • The high school National Honor Society runs a donation drive to provide toys for local kids and had a record year! NHS members collected tips for kids by pumping gas at a local gas station raising $1,700. They also held a pancake breakfast which raised another $1,000. The final event was the annual teacher auction which raised an amazing $6,150. The students bought presents for 35 local kids and will donate the rest to Toys for Tots and other local charities to help kids.
  • The high school student council held a food drive - the Holiday Basket Bonanza. They were collecting money and food to create complete Christmas meals for local families. With the donations, they raised about $2,500.
