The week before break at OMS is filled with fun dress-up days and lunchtime activities to keep the kids smiling and involved before being away from their 550 classmates and 40+ teachers. This is the 3rd year for the Be Nice December spirit week that started because not everyone is excited to go on break. While it’s always nice to take a break from school work, there are students who love to be at school in a caring environment with teachers, friends and guaranteed meals. The Be Nice spirit week makes sure all kids feel a part of something before school’s out for two weeks.
The dress-up days included twin day, decade day and beach day ahead of Friday’s ugly sweater day and contest. Then at lunch, kids had something planned that every student could take part in.
On Monday, kids hopped into the photo area to be the “i” in “nice”. Art club students created the letters.
On Tuesday, be nice leaders set up a table for kids to write a positive affirmation to a classmate. Kids took several and the be nice students are making sure that every student receives one. They were handed out to the kids with a treat during their all-school movie on Thursday afternoon.
Wednesday was wi-fi Wednesday, where kids could bring their own devices or Chromebooks to lunch to have some electronics time.
Thursday was trivia day! There were fun facts about staff members on the cafeteria TVs. Kids had a sheet where they could guess and match the fact with a staff member.
Friday is all about the ugly Christmas sweater contest. This is always a big hit and many kids make their own! Judges pick the top five from each of the two lunch periods, then the top 10 go in front of the student body during the afternoon talent show. The winners are decided by applause.
Be Nice students also put on a birthday bash for staff members with August-December birthdays on Wednesday morning during the delayed start.
This group does a lot to spread the kindness at OMS! #benice #OtsegoPride
