Ella Selent, 2nd grade, holds up the order form and a hair tie that are in the Washington Street Elem. office.
A second grader is compelled to use her talents to help dogs recently rescued by the Allegan County Animal Shelter.

It was just something Ella Selent liked to do - make hair ties using plain pony tail bands and tying ribbons around them. She likes to wear them, too. But her talents have taken a new course.

Like a lot of us in West Michigan, Ella heard about the recent rescue of more than 350 dogs from a Cheshire Township home that are now all at the Allegan County Animal Shelter, "I heard about it so I was really sad about it, and I thought, I was still making these and I could sell them and donate the money to the dogs," Ella says.

She makes hair ties in all different designs, from Otsego Bulldog colors topastels, stripes, polka dots and a mixure of it all. She got very busy making all kinds; she hopes to raise $500. They sell for $2 each.

"I think they would get new homes, food, water and have toys," Ella says of how her donation could help.

There is an order form in the Washington Street Elementary office. The ties will also be available to buy at "Something Sweet" in Allegan or "Moon Rose Cottage" in Otsego starting Friday.
