Congratulations to Tommy Brinn

by ops 13. May 2009 08:00
Good Morning All,Please allow me a few minutes to share and to boast on behalf of one outstanding young man.
I had the rare privilege of accompanying a student athlete to the Detroit Athletic Club Scholar Athlete of the Year Ceremony last night.  Otsego’s own Tommy Brinn was a finalist. This means that of the thousands of applications received, he was judged to be one of the best six in the state of Michigan.
Tommy, his parents and I traveled together. The fact that Tommy and Trevor are outstanding young men is not an accident, this is a fantastic family.
There was a ‘walk through” with the finalists at 4:00. That lasted about an hour and then the young adults were allowed to use locker rooms and the male finalists all changed into tuxedos. Tommy looked great.
The next portion of the affair was a “Strolling Dinner.”  There was a range of hors d’oevres on display that was amazing.
The finalists were encouraged to bring any items they wished to display and after a few minutes into the dinner, they were asked to stand behind the area where they had put together their display. Tommy was the student who stood the longest and talked to people as they looked at his display which was obviously quite impressive.
As the ceremony began, we were welcomed by:  An officer of the Detroit Athletic Club, the President of Chrysler Corporation (Sponsor of the awards) and Steve Garagiola who served as the M.C. for the evening.
The first awards presented were the male and female college athlete’s awards. The female was a basketball player from Hillsdale Katie Cezot. She was very impressive. Steve Garagiola then sat with her in an interview type setting on the stage and spent some time talking to her.  The next was the male who is Tim Hiller, the quarterback at Western Michigan University. He made me very proud to be a Bronco. The best way I could sum up my impression of this young man is he would be an acceptable son in law.
Next, Rowdy Gaines, a three time Olympic Gold Medalist was given an award.  He was there and gave a very nice speech in which he told us that during the time the college athletes were being introduced, he became a grandfather for the first time. Sprinkled throughout the ceremony there were previous winners introduced.  The female winner from last year was present and showed the audience her Olympic Medal.  (Quite impressive.)
Next they presented the six high school ladies who were finalists. The D.A.C. had done an interview a while ago and they filmed the kids introducing themselves and they showed that on a huge screen to open that portion of the evening. Following the video, each young lady was introduced by Steve Garagiola as she walked up to the stage. They then announced the winner of the female award.
The same procedure followed for the young men.
Tommy was not named as the top award winner.  HOWEVER, there is absolutely no way the committee could have made a “wrong” choice.  Every one of the young people chosen to be finalists was an All American.
All in all, it was a great evening, an event that was a first class affair all the way. Tommy, his parents and I spent time talking with the football coach and athletic director at Western Michigan University and we made sure the athletic director knew that if they still had Men’s Track, they could have come after the best in the state and one of the nations finest with a 20 minute drive to Otsego.
I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. I enjoyed my time with the Brinn family, seeing the states finest and being a part of the evening was a true honor.
Monday was one more time when it was “A GREAT DAY TO BE A BULLDOG.”
When you see Tommy, his family and the coaches and teachers who have brought him to this point, I invite you to share a kind word, a congratulatory handshake or a good old fashion “atta boy”. They all deserve it.
Thanks for allowing me to share,
Mike  Garvey, Otsego High School Athletic Director
